Red Wings place goalie Alex Nedeljkovic on waivers

The Detroit Red Wings placed goalie Alex Nedeljkovic on waivers on Sunday.

The 27-year-old has played in just nine games this season, starting eight of them, while posting a 2-4-2 record. He has a 4.09 goals-against average, while posting an .880 save percentage.

The native of Parma, Ohio, had just returned from a conditioning stint in Grand Rapids of the AHL. He posted a 2-1-1 record with a 2.45 GAA and a .919 save percentage while there.

Nedeljkovic was drafted 37th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round of the 2014 entry draft. The Red Wings traded for him in the summer of 2021 for goalie Jonathan Bernier and a third-round pick. He was coming off a season where he played in 23 games for the Hurricanes, posting a 1.90 GAA and a .932SV%, but things have not gone well in two seasons in Detroit.

Nedeljkovic was the starter last season, playing in 59 games, but his stats (3.31 GAA, .901SV%) dipped on the struggling Red Wings. This season, the starter’s job has gone to Ville Husso (2.99, .902), who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in the summer, while Magnus Hellberg (2.81, .896) has posted better numbers in five games of play.

He is earning $3 million this season, after which he is due to become an unrestricted free agent.
