Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Australian Open with knee injury

The Australian Open has been rocked by the sudden withdrawal of Nick Kyrgios in an announcement that blindsided Melbourne Park.

Nick Kyrgios has sensationally withdrawn from the Australian Open with a knee injury.

The Australian called a surprise media conference at Melbourne Park to confirm the news.

“I’m extremely disappointed and I know you will want to know what is going on,” he said.

“I’m exhausted from everything and it’s been brutal, one of the most important tournaments of my career, this hasn’t been easy at all.

“It’s a mixture of emotions, the last slam I played was the US Open and I was very hard on myself after that.

“It’s brutal, going into this event as one of the favourites, it’s brutal.

“This injury hinders my knee, it hinders my movement. The only way to fix it is to get in there.”

Kyrgios’s physio explained the knee injury would not allow him to compete at his best and risked impacting the remainder of his season.

“He will have a procedure next week and remove the cyst.

“The recovery through February is easy and he should be back on court for Indian Wells.”
