Lakers’ LeBron James becomes second NBA player to reach 38,000 points

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James continued his climb up the NBA’s all-time scoring list, reaching 38,000 career points with a quick 12 points in the first quarter against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.

The 38-year-old becomes just the second NBA player to ever reach the milestone. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — the all-time scoring leader — reached 38,000 career points in the 1988-89 season.

James entered Sunday’s game just 11 points away from 38,000 and 398 points from Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387. Watch the game on Sportsnet ONE or SN NOW.

The four-time NBA champion is averaging 29 points per game this season, putting him on pace to break the all-time record in early February, health permitting. He is seventh in the NBA in scoring in 2022-23, shooting 50.3 per cent from the field and 28.5 per cent from three.

In the 20th year of his career, James is also averaging 8.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game.

The Lakers currently hold a 19-23 record and the 13th spot in the Western Conference standings.
